NRCS HawaiiSaku Nakamura Served 46 Outstanding Years of Service
This week the employee highlight section of my.NRCS wants to say a special thank you to an NRCS employee who has given 46 years of outstanding service.
Back in 1957, Saku Nakamura was still in college when he heard about a soil scientist student trainee position with the Soil Conservation Service. Enjoying his soils courses in school, he jumped at the opportunity to work at the Maui Field Office for the summer. Little did he know that a long and dedicated career was set before him.
In 1958 Saku graduated with a Bachelor's degree in tropical crop production from the University of Hawaii . Both Saku and SCS enjoyed the summer experience so much that he came on board full time. Working on almost every island in the Hawaiian Chain, Saku also spent soil mapping details to American Samoa , Guam , and Washington .
A kid at heart with a passion for soils education, Saku is an extraordinary contributor to Hawaii 's annual Conservation Awareness Contests held at the high school level. Without a doubt, Saku is by far the most humble, enthusiastic professional and clearly one that NRCS Hawaii takes great pride in recognizing.
When asked what kept him here so long, he replied, "I love the work!" Now that Saku is retiring, he will have more time to enjoy his gardening and yard work, bicycling, and physical fitness activities.
Thanks, Saku, and congratulations on your retirement!
