The 1st APIO-AIANEA Joint Training Conference
The 8th Annual APIO Training ConferenceAugust 14 -18, 2006
Anchorage, Alaska
The 2006 Joint Employee Training Conference was held in Anchorage, Alaska, from August 14th through August 18th. It was the first joint employee training conference held together by two NRCS employee associations. The conference attendees were approximately 185, included AIANEA and APIO members, AIANEA Elders, NRCS partners, other federal agencies and conference speakers and presenters.
Conference programs were consisted of workshops, cultural awareness training, general session presentations, poster presentation, networking opportunities, and conservation tour.
2006 CONFERENCE THOUGHTS
Well, it was a lot of work, but I think we had another great training conference. It was hard to beat Minneapolis and Wichita, but I think we might have done it in Anchorage. Our partnership with another employee group was a first for NRCS. It was great working with AIANEA.
Our agenda was packed with a good mixture of technical, cultural and interpersonal skills training opportunities. There were also numerous mentoring opportunities both formal and informal. There were many great ideas brought out during the meeting. We need to follow up on them to make sure they don’t get forgotten. I will work on the 810/890 thing.
I want to thank the core APIO planning group which consisted of Angela, Virginia and Pooh. They worked very hard over the past year while maintaining their day jobs. Pooh and Angela also had a job change during the year! Probably the most impressive thing about the APIO membership is their willingness to help in anyway to get the job done. I think Hope had a laptop computer in front of her the entire time we were in Alaska. If I worked as hard as Shirleen while on AL, I would never take a vacation! I want to thank Sam, Vic, Whinny, Yi, Jewel, Doug, Gary, Rattana, Arun, Rick, Terry and Paul for helping out wherever was needed. I know I’m probably missing someone, but it was a pleasure working with all of you.
See you all in Florida next year.
